The couple, currently residing in the U.S. after stepping down from their duties in the British royal family, intend to acquire Golden Visas to travel freely within the Schengen Area. Prince Harry—son of the King of the United Kingdom, Charles III—and his wife, Meghan Markle, have purchased a house in Portugal, as reported by the British tabloid Daily Mail today.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who lost the right to live in Frogmore Cottage, Windsor, after stepping down as senior members of the British royal family in 2020, have considered the U.S. as their main place of residence since this year. With this purchase, they once again have a home on European soil.
However, according to the Daily Mail, this is not the only reason for the purchase. The royal couple is believed to have been motivated to maintain a property in Portugal in order to obtain Golden Visas, thus allowing them to travel freely within the Schengen Area.
Harry and Meghan, however, were not the first to buy a home in Portugal. Princess Eugenie—daughter of Prince Andrew, the King’s brother—and her husband live at the CostaTerra Golf Club in Melides.
It is worth noting that Harry and his wife Meghan have lived in Montecito, California, since stepping down as senior members of the British royal family in March 2020. Their residence was officially changed on June 29, 2023, according to a document provided to Companies House, the British corporate registration authority.
This was the same day that Buckingham Palace confirmed the couple had left Frogmore Cottage, their last residence in the United Kingdom. This country home was originally a gift from Harry’s grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were coerced into removing their belongings from the house, near Windsor Castle, just weeks after Harry criticized the royal family in his memoir Spare.
