In tourist accommodation establishments as a whole, the average income per occupied room reached 105.4 euros in April which corresponds to an increase of 29.6% compared to April 2019.

The tourist accommodation sector recorded 2.7 million guests in April and 6.8 million overnight stays, corresponding to a growth of 16.5% and 13.8%, respectively, when compared to the same period last year, according to data released Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The highest average income per occupied room was recorded in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, Alentejo and the North.

In the fourth month of the year, the average income per occupied room increased by 30% compared to 2019. In all tourist accommodation establishments, the average income per occupied room reached 105.4 euros in April, +14.7% compared to the same month of 2022 (+17.2% in March) and +29.6% compared to April 2019, corresponding to the highest increase compared to the pre-pandemic period.

The highest values of average income per occupied room were recorded in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (137 euros), Alentejo (102 euros) and North (100 euros). The most significant increases were in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (+21.3%), the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+18.3%) and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (+17.8%).

The average income per available room reached 63 euros in April 2023, having increased 22.7% compared to the same month last year (+39.7% in March) and 38.4% compared to April 2019, corresponding to the largest increase compared to the pre-pandemic period, according to the statistics office.

The highest average income per available room values were recorded in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (103 euros) and the Autonomous Region of Madeira (75 euros), with the largest increases occurring in the Autonomous Region of the Azores (+35.8%) and the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (+26.0%).

According to the statistics office, these indicators for the month of April corresponded to 497.1 million euros of total income and 373.6 million euros of room revenue, which represents year-on-year increases of 28.6% and 29.4%, respectively.

In the first four months of the year, total overnight stays grew by 30.0% (+16.7% in residents and +37.1% in non-residents), which corresponded to increases of 46.8% in total income and 48.4% in room related income (+40.2% and +43.6%, respectively, compared to the same period of 2019).

From January to April, there were 8.4 million guests and 20.9 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 31.3% and 29.9%, respectively. Compared to the same period in 2019, overnight stays increased 14.7% (+18.6% in residents and +13.0% in non-residents).

Lisbon and Albufeira with the highest number of overnight stays in April

Of the total overnight stays in April, 73.8% were concentrated in the 23 main municipalities and 30.7% occurred in the municipalities of Lisbon and Albufeira. The municipality of Lisbon concentrated 19.9% of total overnight stays in April 2023 (9.0% of total resident overnight stays and 24.5% of total non-resident overnight stays), reaching 1.4 million overnight stays. Compared to April 2019, overnight stays increased by 10.7% (+5.6% in residents and +11.6% in non-residents).

In April, the Easter effect was significantly felt in the overnight stays of tourists in Albufeira, which rose to the second position among the municipalities with the highest representativeness in the total number of overnight stays in this month (weight of 10.9%; 743.3 thousand overnight stays), despite continuing to record a reduction in overnight stays compared to 2019, although less expressive (-5.2% in total, -11.2% in residents and -3.7% in non-residents)

In Porto, there were 537.7 thousand overnight stays (7.9% of the total), up 34.5% compared to April 2019 (+27.9% in residents and +35.8% in non-residents).
Funchal accounted for 7.6% of total overnight stays (522.2 thousand), up 26.7%, mainly due to residents, who more than doubled compared to April 2019 (+100.5% in residents and +17.9% in non-residents).
